First of all, I am an actual artist. I am in the hobby of art unlike the other reviewers here, who seem to be in the hobby of art-book-collecting.Second, this book is beyond useless because the 192 pages go something like this (not necessarily in full order):"Here are some tools and how I stand. Here's my thoughts on doing some warmup sketching. There's a thing called the Reilly method for figure drawing; I could write a book about it but apparently I can't even afford a paragraph to enlighten the reader. Pause: I hope you're enjoying all of my crappy doodles up to this point because it's about to get worse. I'm too lazy to doodle for most of the rest of the book, so here are several photographs and a lot of art and worthless, vague, half-lucid half-paragraphs from a bunch of different artists. Lastly, here are some reference photographs."That's the book in a nutshell. If you read the above paragraph while looking at the image results to an internet search for "art student drawings", you'd have all of the knowledge that this book imparts, albeit for free. Out of the 192 pages of this book, only 3 pages have any information that you can even try to put into practice (Page 13: Application and Mindfulness, Page 22: Posture, and Whichever page he spent failing to explain the Reilly Method). The rest of the book is just the author's bad drawings, filler content, and reference photographs.I would return my copy, but I was lucky enough to have bought it used. I also threw it away within 3 days. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd rather have a Christopher Hart book than this.
This is not a definitive book on figure drawing but it provides good information and examples for both the experienced and new figure artist. The core of the book is Chapter; 4," Drawing Techniques".The section on gesture is as clear as any that I have seen. Gesture is a hard subject to discuss and illustrate. Kan Muftic uses both diagrams superimposed on photographs and his own vivid drawings to illustrate the gesture as movement going beyond the ends of the figure. He expands these ideas in the chapter sections on "Bodies in Motion" and "Design." Here he shares his approach which he uses in concept drawing for film an animation. For me, these three sections on gesture alone are worth the price of the book.Chapter 4 also also adapts "The Reilly Method" for laying out the shoulder and hips making it useful for laying put the central body masses of hips and chest. He picks out a core concept here, avoiding the complexity of the complete Reilly system. The section on shadow mapping is fundamental in showing volume and light in the figure. He applies shadow mapping beautifully in his ample drawings throughout the book. He gives self effacing credit to a teacher, Henry Yan, who further demonstrates these ideas in his book "Tips and Techniques."Chapter 5," Problem Areas", is good but inconsistently developed. It has an exhaustive and vividly developed section on head drawing but i found the head drawing approach by Michael Hampton in "Figure Drawing; Design and Invention" more useful because it begins with the nose rather than the ear. The area of the pelvis is appropriately mentioned but has only one weak illustration of this important pelvic area. In like manner the section on legs is thinly developed. Legs are important not only for gesture, which is well developed, but are also fundamental for holding the weight of the figure which is not discussed. The book makes generous use of nude photographs, more than most books on figure drawing. The model used on the cover drawing is featured though out the book. There are many drawings and photographs here to both study and draw from.
